A growing coalition of neighbors, nonprofits, and disaster relief agencies working together to address extreme weather events on Chicago’s West Side.
Disaster Strikes
In the summer of 2023 Chicago’s West Side was hit by disaster-level flooding from extreme rainfall. Poorly-maintained infrastructure led to over 15,000 homes flooding with rainwater and sewage. With little guidance from government agencies, concerned neighbors went to work meeting with residents, raising money for cleanup and sanitation crews, and advocating for more urgency and equity in the government’s response. From this work the West Side Long-Term Recovery Group (WLTRG) was formed.
Our Response
Our volunteer case managers are working with residents to assess the damage to their homes and understand the relief options available to them. Case managers are then working to deploy volunteer contractors to begin the work of:
Waste removal / muck out
Mold remediation
Rebuild
Planning Ahead
We know that 2023’s flooding will not be an isolated event. We are working with our partner organizations to build community capacity to respond to future floods and extreme weather events.
This work is particularly important to ensure our most vulnerable residents are not displaced, financially devastated, or suffer from long-term health affects from mold contamination.

EPA Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting Training (RRP)
EPA wants your help to fight childhood lead-poisoning prevention in the local community. ANYONE who provides renovation or maintenance work for homes, schools or day-care centers built before 1978 MUST COMPLETE this training, offered for free for those who register by the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 5 Office in Chicago.

WHO: Building code officials, contractors, landlords, residential service providers, and residents are encouraged to participate. Must work or live in the local area, be at least 18 years of age, and be available for full day. Must understand and read English, and be able to show State photo ID for proof of residence for EPA.
